Magnetic flux densities calculated for two NI excitation values of a standard condenser magnetic lens. Iron Yoke and a permalloy FeNi pole piece are used. The pole piece saturation effect observed for 5720 A.Turn is clearly visible.

Designing modular electrons optics components will provide an elegant way for adapting a flexible Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) instrument to individual experiments, rather than adapting experiments and samples to the limited TEM capability. One of the main bottlenecks preventing the TEM to be easily modified lies in the design of the electromagnetic (EM) lens which has never be thought to be modular.

The MOLENS project aims to design a modular EM lens addressing all the requirements in terms of coils properties, yoke and pole piece materials for the magnetic circuit, optical properties for optimum imaging conditions, but providing a fully modular design.

This lens will be fabricated and tested on a first modular TEM bench. Electron diffraction and imaging experiments will be used to fully characterized the potentiality and limitation of this new lens concept compare to actual design.
