Two distinguishable particles (impurities) immersed into a one-dimensional quantum liquid experience the Casimir-like interaction mediated by the host particles. The interaction can be attractive and then it can lead to a bound state of two impurities (a bipolaron).

The motion of a quantum impurity through a many-body environment is an old subject with a resurgent interest. Remarkable realizations with cold atomic gases opened a new door into the rich physics of this problem. With this project we aim at developing the theory for the impurity relaxation dynamics and bipolaron formation. These fundamental questions are relevant for a large class of phenomena. We will attack this ambitious program by studying one-dimensional quantum liquids. We will address the most pressing questions arising from recent experiments.
